Abstract:The Christian Literature Society was the church organization led by the Protestant missionaries for translation and publishing. Itpublished biography of founders, cleric and laypeopleof the Protestant for preaching Protestantism, and also published biography of European and American politicians toengage inthe modern China's political reform. The society expressed theadvocation of political reform by publishing politician’s biography and the commercials concerned, i.e. reform and constitutionalism in the late Qing Dynasty and republicanismand civil rights claims in early Republic era. Translating and publishing politician’s biographyto participate inpolitical reform was a form of missionary, intended to expand its political and cultural influence to pave the way for the promotion of Protestantism in China. The result, however, is facilitating the introduction and spread of Western Studies, in particular the western political system, hence supporting the reform and constitutionalism in the late Qing Dynasty and echoingrepublicanismand civil rights claims in early Republic era.
