Abstract: This article examines the debates and trends in French academia caused by Philip Lejeune’s The Autobiographical Pact. This paper reveals many of the proposed arguments such as Lejeune’s concept of the autobiographical space which he put forth when he started his autobiographical research.

Jeanyves Guérin (1966 - ) is Professor of Rouen University and a core member of Philip Lejeune’s autobiographical research team. He is now editing the autobiographical dictionary of French speaking regions, with the major works of Le Journal intime, genre littéraire et écriture ordinaire (2004, with a preface by Lejeune), Journal personnel et correspondance (1785-1939) (2009), etc.
