Debunking Rousseau: the Awkwardness of Wu Mi’s Self Portrayal as a “Moralist”

Abstract: Affected by the New Humanism, Wu Mi was always critical to Rousseau, and so became typical of Anti-Rousseauer. But the obvious inconsistence between his ideas and behaviors show a serious misreading of Rousseau and his strong bias, and also exposes the inherent contradiction and embarrassment of his personality. Based on the relationship of Wu Mi and Rousseau, this essay tries to explore the behavior and essence of “Wu Mi against Rousseau”, so as to deepen the understanding of Wu Mi’s characters.

Key words:  Rousseau, Wu Mi, Autobiography, Character, Morality
