The Historical Formation of Lu Xun’s Image as a "Revolutionary Artist": A Study of Hu Man's Interpretation of Lu Xun’s Art Spirit

Abstract: Subsequent to Lu Xun’s demise, Hu Man, from the national anti-Japanese War standpoint, presents the first Marxism-oriented systematical interpretation of Lu Xun's art spirit as a "revolutionary writer”. During Yan’an Period, with Hu Man’s admiring comment from the New Democratic perspective, Lu Xun’s art spirit has escalated into Art History as “a revolutionary artist”, eventually correlating Lu Xun’s artistic considerations with Mao Zedong Literary and Artistic Thought, and implicitly rejecting other artists' critical and aesthetic interpretations of Lu Xun's art spirit. It is precisely because of Hu Man’s analytical connections with the political ideologies in varied periods that Lu Xun’s image as a "Revolutionary Artist" has achieved a gradual acceptance and recognition widely among the artists in Yan’an period and Mao Zedong era.
