The Identification of Ju Zhong Men Wai Han and Liang Xi Zuo Guan Lao Ren

Abstract: Concerning “Ju Zhong Men Wai Han (In-Game Outsider)”, the pseudonym of the author of London Bamboo Ditties and “Liang Xi Zuo Guan Lao Ren (An Old Man Sitting at Ease by Liang Brook)”, the pseudonym of the author of Unauthorized Historical Records about Qing Dynasty, academic researchers have made various propositions. Based on the examination of diversified materials this essay testifies the proposition that the author of both books is no other than the Late Qing diplomat Zhang Zuyi, and suggests some explanations for his using the pen-names.

Yin Dexiang is a Professor of Comparative literature at Ningbo University. He is specialized in Sino-Western literary and cultural relations since 1840. He has published Across the East Sea and the West Sea: The cultural Observation, Identification and Choice in the Diaries of the Late Qing Diplomats to the Western Countries (2009) and his second book, Textual Research on the Bamboo Ditties about Foreign Countries in the Late Qing Dynasty, is forthcoming.

 

Guo Jiulin is a Professor Emeritus of literature at Chinese Department of Sichuan International Studies University. he is a member of China Writers Association and a former member of the presidium of Chongqing Writers Association and Director of its Board of Creation of Movie and TV Literature Works. His publications include Working as a Guard for Beloved Vice-chairman Zhou Enlai, Stories of Chen Yi in His Early Years, Luo Shiwen: a Biography, Luo Shiwen in His Early Teens, Stories of Yan Yi, Ke Yan: a Life, and Stories of Zhang Junbiao. His academic writings are On Writing Biographical Literary Works, Writing and Appreciation of Biographic Literature Works, A History of China’s Biographical Literature in the 20th Century, On Inspiration for Literary Creation, On Poems by He Jingzhi, and A History of 20th Century Literature in Greater China. Other works by Guo include Harp Strings of Love, Selected Essays by Guo Jiulin, Silent Emotions (a TV play in four episodes), The Birth of a Statue (a TV play in two episodes). Many of his works have been awarded.
