Ge Gongzhen's "Pink News": the Literary Imagination in Memoirs by Reporters in the Era of ROC

Abstract: Many memoirs by reporters in the era of ROC are circulated in China’s mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. There are even four versions of Ge Gongzhen’s love affairs and related “pink news,” allegedly written by his colleague or friend. Owing to the omission and concealment in Ge’s biography published in China’s mainland, the stories in the afore-mentioned memoirs are well accepted, yet not faithful to the historical fact. Through a critical examination and analysis, the “pink news” is identified as merely gossips originated in 1920-1930, fabricated in 1960-1970 and shaped into its present fashion by diaspra ROC journalists. In fact, Ge’s marriage is a tragedy of his day which has little to do with pink news. This reflects the defects of those memoirs, which hence cannot be employed as authentic biographical materials.
