Writing Lives for Women: A Case Study of S.A. Alexievich’s War’s Unwomanly Face

AbstractIn the form of oral history, the Nobel laureate S.A. Alexievich witnessed and preserved the life stories of many Soviet and post-Soviet females. In her women’s life writings, the personal experience of females not only reflects the history of the nation that was obscured by male voices, but also shows their independent values as individual lives. War’s Unwomanly Face which is explicitly devoted to women in wartime fully reflects the self-exploration of the female subject. As the writer’s first documentary work, the polyphonic style, the narration of group lives, and the aesthetic characteristics of such prose make unique contribution on women’s life writing.
